Upper School

The Upper School Programs

Students in fifth through eighth grade at Woodland Country Day School engage in a challenging and well-rounded curriculum that prepares them for success beyond the Upper School classroom. They develop essential skills and attitudes that foster academic excellence, leadership, and personal growth.

Our curriculum includes science, geography, history, mathematics, composition, English, Spanish, and Latin, along with enrichment in reading, grammar, technology, art, music, drama, and physical education.

Through individualized learning, collaborative projects, leadership opportunities, and extracurricular activities, students cultivate creativity and curiosity while building a strong foundation in time management, study skills, and research methods—essential tools for high school, college, and beyond.

Language Arts

Exposure to diverse literature, vocabulary, and grammar enhances students’ ability to think critically, read analytically, and write with clarity and purpose. By engaging with a wide range of texts and language skills, students become more thoughtful readers, more skilled writers, and more responsible, engaged members of their communities.

Mathematics

After mastering the Common Core State Standards through sixth grade, students transition into Algebra, where they develop advanced problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills. This foundation prepares them for higher-level mathematics and real-world applications.

Composition

Students will engage critically and strategically with a variety of texts to support writing goals. They will develop pre-writing, composing, revising, and editing strategies for a variety of purposes, audiences, writing situations, and genres.

History/Geography

Learning history and geography through the impact of the development of western civilization, allows students to analyze historical events while developing a strong sense of global history.

Science

Biology, Physics and Chemistry concepts are the core in a program teaching students to become critical thinkers, and to understand and apply scientific concepts, principles and theories.

Latin

Learning to read and pronounce Latin lets our Seventh and Eighth graders sharpen their grammar skills and broaden their vocabulary.

Music & Drama

Along with developing a confidence to perform, the music and drama studies in the Upper School foster an understanding of music theory and music and drama history.

Fine Arts

Students earn the principals of perspective, detail rendering, foreshortening and positive-negative space and experience 3-Dimensional design.

Spanish

Students are immersed in the cultures of Spain and Latin America via storytelling, history, geography, dance and food.

Physical Education

Building a strong mind and a strong body go hand in hand. Students have this fitness, sports class three times a week.

Technology

Fostering technology literacy through a 1:1 iPad program where students learn the essential tools of digital organization through the Google Workspace for Education and the basics of coding.
